This event was cancelled on 10 August due to the solar eclipse. Here is the email from the organizers:
“We regret to inform you that due to the extenuating circumstances surrounding the up-coming solar eclipse, we have been forced to cancel the Portland event at Portland Meadows on August 18-20, 2017.
You are probably asking “why would the eclipse have anything to do with the Electric Bike Expo?” The answer is with the availability of the event services and equipment we need to create the event.
We use local vendors in each city we travel to for tents, temporary fencing, portable restrooms and portable power generation. Over the last few weeks, we have been getting notices from some of our suppliers that they were going to have trouble servicing our event. The availability of rental properties was drying up and what we had reserved was going to be a problem with the removal on Monday morning, right at the point of the solar event.
Our venue management was telling us of reports where anticipated traffic snarls on the I-5 corridor could be as long as 3 to 5 hours. Local news stories indicated local residents were being warned to remain home unless they needed to be somewhere as there is anticipate 1.2 to 1.5 million visitors heading to your region.
The portable restroom situation has become an emergency for many events. The top national suppliers indicate that there is a complete shortage in Oregon, Washington and Northern California. Some suppliers we work with on a national level were willing to bring goods in from other states but could not guarantee to collect the rental items for as long as a week following our Expo.
Finally, with all of the excitement, we were getting reports of local 2-star hotel properties with nightly rates as much as $300 and 4-star hotels going for more than $450 per night. Our exhibitors can’t afford this and I am sure some of you that planned to travel to the Expo would have been subjected to similar rates.
We looked a moving the event but most of the manufacturers have full promotional schedules right through September and the October weather in Portland can be challenging. So because of all of this, we don’t have much choice other than to say, we are planning to return to Portland in 2018 and we will make sure to follow all of the celestial events well in advance.”
End of email from organizers.
I can attest that the hotel rates were gouging – but we did manage to find a decently priced room at the Red Roof Inn, and they have kindly accepted our cancellation without charging a fee, so that is OK.
Here is what the event would have been like:
The Electric Bike Expo is coming to Portland this month. This Electric Bike Expo is a demonstration event that travels the USA, offering the opportunity to test ride more than 150 different ebikes on a closed test track, for free. What’s not to like about that? Plus, you get to learn all about ebiking and the latest ebikes, also for free! Finally … it’s in Portland, which is one of the finest cities in the world to ride a bike.
Test Ride More Than 150 Different Ebikes

Here is a video in which the legendary ebike expert, Turbo Bob, organizes a group ride at a previous Electric Bike Expo, this one in San Diego!
Other Opportunities at the Portland Electric Bike Expo
Meet the manufacturers, attend free safety education sessions, and spend five dollars on a raffle ticket that could win you a Carmel or Santa Barbara hybrid electric bike worth $4,000! All raffle proceeds go to a local bike advocacy organization. Or, just buy a bike with one of the special discounts available at the Electric Bike Expo.
The event is at Portland Meadows on August 18-20, 2017. That’s at 1001 N Schmeer Rd, Portland, OR 97217. If you are thinking about this event, book a hotel now. We just decided to go, and it took a long time to find a hotel that still had a room AND would let us store our bikes indoors.
